An Abnormal Indivisible Load (AIL) is a load that, due to its weight or dimensions, cannot be broken down for transport without undue expense or risk of damage, and exceeds the legal limits for standard vehicles in the UK.
AILs can travel without adhering to any embargo with a maximum width up to and including 3.5m, where the AIL is:
All other movements will remain subject to embargo periods.
All movements as normal must be conducted in full compliance with any legislation. Movements during an embargo period are only permitted on multi-lane carriageways.
During normal embargo periods the AIL should not pass other slower moving vehicles to prevent impact on normal traffic flow. Embargo periods will remain for any other carriageway to minimise disruption.
A dispensation is a permission for an abnormal load to travel without having to notify us each time.
Please use our dispensation form to apply for a dispensation.
