Cambridgeshire Constabulary has marked a major milestone in its long-term investment in policing infrastructure, with the new Milton Police Station now open and operational.
Located next to Milton Park and Ride, the two-storey station is a modern policing facility designed to improve services to the public, manage increasing demand, strengthen community safety, and better support frontline officers and staff across the district.
Police officers and staff have now moved into the purpose-built facility, which provides a modern operational base and custody suite to replace the outdated Parkside Police Station, which no longer met modern policing standards or future needs.
The site includes a 24‑cell custody suite, doubling existing capacity, alongside consultation and interview rooms, medical facilities and secure detainee holding areas that allow multiple detainees to be processed simultaneously. Open plan office accommodation supports day‑to‑day policing, investigative work and cross‑force and multi‑agency collaboration. The building is equipped with air source heat pumps, solar PV, electric chargers and has an A rating for energy efficiency.

The building has been designed to improve response capability through its strategic location and enhanced road and public transport access, while secure, well‑integrated vehicle routes ensure the safe movement of officers and detainees around the site. Dedicated welfare facilities, including breakout spaces, quiet rooms, gym, showers and cycle storage, support staff wellbeing and sustainable travel.
Chief Constable Chris Balmer said: “The opening of Milton Police Station is a significant moment for Cambridgeshire Constabulary and for the communities we serve. This modern, purpose-built facility gives our officers and staff the environment, tools and capacity they need to meet rising demand, respond more efficiently, and provide a high-quality service to the public for many years to come. It represents a major investment in community safety and in our frontline people.”
Police and Crime Commissioner, Darryl Preston said: “As a former police officer who regularly worked out of Parkside Police Station, the Milton facility offers a more modern working environment for police officers and staff.
“It’s better access to our roads network will enable the Constabulary to meet the demands of our growing population, particularly in the south of the county.
“I would like to thank everyone involved in the development – from the constructors, Wilmott Dixon to our Estates and IT Team who have worked tirelessly to make this happening.”
Plans for the new station were submitted in September 2020 following a review of 22 potential sites. The Milton location was selected as it best met operational needs and planned growth in Cambridgeshire. Planning approval was granted by South Cambridgeshire District Council in March 2021.
Following the completion of an extensive archaeological investigation, construction began in January 2024. The new facility replaces Parkside Police Station, built in the 1960s, which is beyond its functional lifespan, lacks sufficient custody capacity and does not meet modern inspection standards.
The Constabulary remains committed to maintaining a city-centre policing presence focused on neighbourhood policing and public enquiry office access, with further details to be confirmed in due course.
