Woman subjected to weeks of violence and control

A man who terrorised his partner for up to six weeks has been jailed for three years.

Benjamin Davies, 32, subjected the victim to daily violence, repeatedly kicking, punching, and throwing things at her.

Davies would strangle the victim during arguments to stop her talking and, on one occasion, restricted her breathing.

He also smashed the victim's mobile phone by throwing it against a wall and damaged her glasses and bank cards.

The abuse only came to an end when a family member of the victim received anonymous messages claiming she needed help.

They contacted police who went to Davies’ home in Slade Way, Chatteris, on 20 November last year.

There was no answer at the property, however, neighbours reported they had heard shouting and banging coming from inside earlier that day.

One told officers the victim had handed her a piece of paper containing three telephone numbers and asked her to get help because Davies had been assaulting her.

But when Davies realised the victim was trying to seek help, he dragged her back inside and threatened to kill both her and him if she tried to leave again.

Based on the information gathered at the scene, officers forced entry and arrested Davies.

On Thursday (16 July), at Cambridge Crown Court, Davies was sentenced to three years in prison and handed a ten-year restraining order after pleading guilty to actual bodily harm, intentional strangulation, intentional suffocation and three counts of criminal damage.

One count of engage in controlling/coercive behaviour in an intimate/family relationship was ordered to lie on file.

Detective Sergeant Sam Moorby, who investigated, said: “Davies subjected the victim to a sustained campaign of violence, control and intimidation throughout their relationship, leaving her frightened and isolated.

“His behaviour escalated to the point where he threatened to kill both her and him if she tried to leave and repeatedly used violence to maintain control over her.

“I would like to praise the victim for her courage in coming forwards and supporting our investigation despite the ordeal she had endured.

“Domestic abuse can affect anyone, and no one should suffer in silence. If you are experiencing abuse, or know someone who is, please report it. We will listen, we will support you, and we will act against offenders.”
