Man jailed for second dangerous driving conviction in a year

A man is behind bars after driving dangerously while on a suspended sentence for the same offence.

Andrew Dunkley, 38, was spotted on CCTV in the early hours of 5 May at Trumpington Park and Ride, Cambridge, suspected to be taking drugs in a blue Peugeot 207.

An officer arrived and tried to block the Peugeot in but Dunkley sped off and a pursuit around the streets of Trumpington began.

Dunkley reached speeds of 80 mph in a 40 mph zone, drove through a red traffic light and attempted to reverse into the police car.

The car was later found abandoned in Hobson Avenue.

Officers also spotted Dunkley driving a black Vauxhall Astra in the car park at Tesco Extra in Bar Hill on 3 July.

They tried to stop him but he drove off.

He was eventually arrested on 7 July after being found hiding in an abandoned caravan in Orchard Close, Little Wilbraham.

Dunkley was already disqualified from driving and subject to a suspended sentence for dangerous driving following a conviction in April.

On Wednesday (19 August), at Peterborough Crown Court, Dunkley, of Ellison Close, Cambridge, was jailed for 22 months having pleaded guilty to dangerous driving which activated his suspended sentence.

He also pleaded guilty and received no separate penalty for two counts each of disqualified driving and driving with no insurance as well as being banned from driving for three years and 10 months.

DC Matthew Grace, who investigated, said: “Dunkley showed no regard for his previous conviction for dangerous driving, thinking he was above the law and could continue to drive despite not having a licence.

“His driving was incredibly reckless, and he will now have to deal with the consequences of his actions.”
