Driver jailed after 100mph crash

A man has been jailed after seriously injuring his passenger in a 100mph crash.

Leigh Shelton, 64, picked up three people he knew in Littleport after their vehicle broke down on 16 June 2024.

While driving along the A10 and A1101 towards Norfolk, he began overtaking vehicles and accelerating up to speeds of 100mph.

Despite being told to slow down, he continued to speed and lost control of the Honda Civic, leaving the road and flipping into a field.

Emergency services attended and one of the passengers was taken to hospital with a broken wrist.

Shelton, of Fir Road, Thetford, Norfolk, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He was sentenced at Peterborough Crown Court on Tuesday (2 December) to two years and three months in prison. On release he will be banned from driving for four years and be required to take an extended re-test.

PC Benjamin Perry said: “You could see by the state of the car how lucky everyone was to come out alive.

“Leigh’s driving was completely irresponsible and has left the passengers with not only physical injuries, but also psychological trauma from the crash.”
