My name is Kurt Eisler and I am a Demand Hub call handler.
How long have you been working for Cambridgeshire Constabulary?
I have been working for Cambridgeshire Constabulary for a little over a year. I applied for the role initially in April 2021 but went into a holding for a position and started October 2021.
What initially interested you in this job?
I’ve always wanted to join the police since I was quite young but I think initially when I applied for the role, I liked the idea of being involved in the frontline. Whilst we don’t attend jobs, we do get a glimpse into the incidents, whether that be day to day petty crimes or much more serious incidents. The idea of being the first contact for the public with the police really sold the role to me.
What do you think is the best part of your job?
It sounds cliché but no two calls are the same. You can have two calls one after the other, and each are completely different requiring different approaches. I love that it keeps you on your toes. Whilst the training is thorough, it can’t prepare you for every call and that on-the-spot calculation of risks, as well as the adaptability required, can be quite thrilling at times. If I can make a difference to help callers be calm before help arrives that leaves me feeling I’ve done a good job.
What would you say to anyone considering a career as an emergency call handler?
Do it! Make the application. It may not seem that sitting in an office will make a huge difference, but the work we do and the calls we take have influence over the entire county and that’s no small achievement!
