My name is Carmen, and I have been working for Cambridgeshire Constabulary for just over six years.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love to spend time with my partner and young children, I love to get outside in my garden, going out to eat, going to the gym, and I do lots of reading.
What inspired you to get into your role as a call handler?
I have always been interested in the psychology behind criminal offences and wanted a role that was fast paced and required lots of different ways to problem solve. I also wanted to perform a job that gave me a real sense of satisfaction. I’ve always been good at multi-tasking and I like that my work as a call handler requires this and keeps me on my toes.
Why do you think you’re suited to your role as a call handler?
I am able to condense a large amount of information into the important parts and weed out the pieces I need to enable me to make a quick decision, which allows me to put on a job and send it across to dispatch within a minute or two, this means a better service for those in an emergency situation. I also like to do many tasks at once, and enjoy working as part of a team, where everyone pulls together to help each other get the information we need.
I am also able to remain somewhat distanced from certain calls which means that I am able to work through difficult situations with a caller or victim, and take relevant information to prevent them having to repeat themselves to officers which is a benefit to the caller.
What would you say to anyone considering call handling as a career?
If you enjoy a high pressure environment, a fast paced role, and using technology, give it a go. The job isn’t for everyone and does have its challenges, but overall it’s a very rewarding career and the shifts offer a really great work life balance.
