Motorist made desperate bid to escape police

An unlicenced and uninsured driver who tried to drive the wrong way along the A1 to shake police off his tail police has been jailed.

Amer Jahangeer, 33, was spotted by officers driving a blue Audi A4 estate near St Neots at about 3.10am on Friday, 12 January, and he immediately made off.

The officers tried to stop him in Great North Road, St Neots, but he continued through some temporary traffic lights on red.

He drove south on Great North Road at speeds of up to 68 mph and ignored roundabouts and keep left signs.

The Audi was stung by police and Jahangeer continued driving onto the southbound entry slip-road for the A1 at Wyboston.

He tried to drive northbound on the southbound carriageway, but the officers made contact with the Audi to stop it.

Jahangeer was arrested and found to only have a provisional driving licence as well as no insurance to drive the Audi.

On Friday (27 September), Jahangeer, of Empire Avenue, Tottenham, London, was jailed for 12 months, having pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at an earlier hearing, but received no separate penalty for driving with no licence and no insurance.

He was also disqualified from driving for four years and six months and must take an extended re-test.

Sergeant Mark Atkins, from the road policing unit, said: “Jahangeer’s driving was ridiculous, when all he needed to do was pull over when requested to do so. He could have avoided a custodial sentence and not endangered other motorists.

"Fortunately, the officers acted swiftly to bring the pursuit to a safe conclusion."
