A Peterborough man has been jailed after he grabbed his partner by the neck and told police officers, “if you don’t arrest me, I’ll murder her”.
Police were called to the house of Raymond Yardy, 66, and his wife after an argument became violent at about 12.30pm on 13 June.
Yardy, of Coneygree Road, Peterborough, had become frustrated that his wife’s dogs had damaged the carpet and he accused her of having a drink problem.
He put his hands around her neck and threatened to kill her, which prompted her to call police.
Officers arrived and after speaking to Yardy and his wife separately, it was decided she would spend the night at a friend’s house.
When officers were about to leave, Yardy became agitated, putting his hands around his wife’s neck in front of officers and dragging her back inside the house.
Yardy insisted officers should arrest him and threatened to kill his wife before offering his hands to be cuffed.
Yardy pleaded guilty to making threats to kill and at Peterborough Crown Court on Tuesday (8 October) he was jailed for one year and eight months.
PC Ryan Grist, who investigated, said: “Yardy’s actions in front of police officers showed just how violent he was capable of being.
“He showed no remorse and, had he not been jailed, his victim would likely have suffered more abuse at his hands.”
