A man has been jailed for more than three years after hitting his former partner with a hockey stick and dragging her across a floor by her hair.
Florin Bairam, 34, would spend the woman’s money, take away her mobile phone and only let her bathe, eat and sleep when he allowed her to.
Bairam, of Northfield Road, New England, Peterborough, also threatened to kill the victim and her children and rape her 16-year-old daughter.
His offending only came to light when he was the victim of an assault and was visited at home by police officers.
As the officers spoke to Bairam, the victim spoke to him in Romanian. He responded aggressively, pointing in her face, and telling her to be quiet.
The officers asked to speak to her upstairs, out of earshot of Bairam, to check she was okay.
Bairam immediately signalled to his mother, who was also in the house at the time, to go upstairs with the victim and the officer, but she was told to stay downstairs.
While the victim was walking out of the room with the police officer, Bairam whistled to her and made a “cut-throat gesture”, drawing his hand across his throat.
When upstairs, the victim showed bruises to the officer and spoke about the assaults.
The victim said she wanted to leave the country to get away from Bairam but was too scared.
Bairam pleaded guilty to false imprisonment and actual bodily harm and at Cambridge Crown Court on Friday (4 October) was jailed for two years and two months and received a restraining order against the victim.
He was also sentenced for an unrelated burglary and fraud charges, for which he received an additional 18 months, taking his total sentence to three years and eight months.
Detective Constable, Edyta Nightingale, who investigated said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim who was extremely brave to come forward and tell officers about her abuser.
“Bairam used intimidation, fear and violence against the victim, and I am pleased he is now behind bars.
“Tackling domestic abuse is one of our main priorities as we strive to support victims and bring perpetrators before the courts.”
