A drink drive had a lucky escape after plunging into a water-filled ditch in Littleport.
Edgaras Jucikas admitted drinking around four pints of beer before getting into his black Peugeot on the afternoon of 14 June.
A member of the public called police after witnessing his car leave Westmoor Drove and flip into the ditch.
The 28-year-old of Beck Row, Bury St Edmunds, was helped out of the ditch and given blankets.
When officers arrived they carried out a roadside breath test where he blew 75, just over twice the legal limit of 35 microgrammes per 100ml of breath.
At Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Monday (11 November), Jucikas was sentenced to three months in prison after pleading guilty to drink driving, driving whilst disqualified, driving without insurance and failing to appear. He was also disqualified from driving for four-and-a-half years.
PC Baillie Morgan- Heritage, who investigated, said: “Jucikas is extremely lucky to be here today. If it wasn’t for a member of the public seeing his vehicle leave the road, he could’ve gone into the ditch without anyone knowing or being able to seek help.
“Drinking affects your reaction times, your vision and your ability to concentrate. As Jucikas demonstrated, drink drivers put their lives at risk by getting behind the wheel, not to mention the lives of other road users.”
Cambridgeshire Constabulary operates a confidential, 24/7 hotline to report suspected drink or drug drivers on 0800 032 0845.
