Drink driver disqualified after crashing into lamppost

A drink driver has lost his licence after he crashed into a lamppost in Cambridge.
Police received a call from a concerned member of the public at about 3am on 2 June to say that a silver Mercedes was parked in the middle of Hills Road and the driver was slumped over the steering wheel.
Residents woke the driver, 43-year-old Tom Onyango, who then started driving slowly towards the train station before crashing into a lamppost.
Onyango, of Beck Row in Bury St Edmunds, blew 89 at the roadside, more than twice the legal limit of 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath.
He went on to provide an evidential reading of 77 in custody.
At Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (4 July), he was disqualified from driving for 20 months and must pay a £288 fine.
PC Francesca Lynch said: “We continue to urge motorists to report their concerns around drink and drug drivers across Cambridgeshire so we can make the roads a safer place for everyone.”
