A Christmas operation to crack down on drink and drug drivers has snared it’s first drink driver.
Officers from the Road Policing Unit were carrying out random breath tests along Elizabeth Way in Cambridge on Friday (6 December) evening when they stopped a Toyota Yaris.
The driver, 22-year-old Lydia Solon, of White Hart Court, St Ives, admitted having a drink two hours previously and provided a roadside breath test of 58 microgrammes. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath.
Solon was arrested and taken into custody where she provided an evidential sample of 43 microgrammes.
At Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (10 December), Solon was disqualified from driving for a year and must pay a £438 fine after she pleaded guilty to drink driving.
PC Sam Butler, from the Road Policing Unit, said: “As part of our Christmas drink and drug drive campaign we carry out random spot checks across the county. There is no excuse for drink driving, it puts your life, the life of your passengers and other road users at risk.
“While we can’t be everywhere, we could be anywhere so this is a reminder to ask yourself whether getting behind the wheel is really worth the risk?”
Police operate a confidential drink and drug hotline 0800 032 0845 which is available 24/7.
