A thief who tried to run from police in Peterborough has been jailed.
Antonio Kis, 27, was arrested by a neighbourhood policing officer who was on foot patrol in Eastfield on Monday (29 July).
The officer came across Kis with a group of people in an underpass – an area known for drug use and anti-social behaviour – and ran his name through the Police National Computer (PNC).
Kis, who was wanted in connection with theft from a vehicle, made a run for it but was caught up with and arrested in Cavendish Street.
On 3 June, Kis stole £1,280 in cash and a set of house keys from a BMW in Taverners Road, Millfield. He was caught in the act by the owner, who chased him down the street but Kis managed to get away.
His DNA was found on the car as well as a carrier bag he dropped which was recovered by police for forensic testing.
Kis, of Park Road, Peterborough City Centre, was charged with theft from a motor vehicle which he admitted at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (30 July) and was jailed for 16 weeks. He must also pay £150 in compensation to the victim.
Detective Constable Katey Shaw, who investigated, said: “This was a good piece of proactive policing work by the officer who was on patrol in an area raised as a concern by the local community.
“Unluckily for Kis, despite trying to outrun the officer, he was caught up with and is now spending the rest of the summer in prison.”
