A man who was pulled over by police after they suspected him of drug dealing threw his stash out of the car window.
Ardley Wray, 59, was seen by police leaving a property in Hauxton, South Cambridgeshire, in September 2022, after they received intelligence that drug dealing was taking place at the premises.
They saw Wray enter the property before leaving after about 20 minutes and driving towards the A10.
Officers followed Wray and signalled for him to pull over, but he made off, weaving between two police cars to escape. Officers deployed a stinger further up the road to puncture Wray’s tyres, but he jumped out of the vehicle and made off on foot across a field next to the A10.
Officers detained him in the field a few moments later.
During the pursuit, officers saw Wray throw a bin liner out of the window. On closer inspection of the bag, they discovered £7,000 worth of crack cocaine. The wraps inside matched the colour of wraps found on Wray’s person after a search.
Officers also found a small amount of cash in the vehicle and evidence of dealing-related messages on his phone.
Wray, of Bedivere Road, Bromley, Greater London, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply cocaine and heroin. He was sentenced to five years and seven months in prison at Cambridge Crown Court on Friday (9 August).
Detective Sergeant Jonathan Lockwood, who investigated, said: “Wray thought he could evade punishment by discarding a large quantity of the drugs out of his car window.
“Unfortunately for him, one of our officers spotted this move and thwarted his plan.
“Drugs are a scourge on our society and cause misery for so many in so many ways. I’m glad justice has been done today.”
