Man smashed up bus stop with drain cover

A man who smashed a bus shelter with a drain cover before handing himself in to police has been jailed.

Ronald Naidoo, 43, made his way to a bus stop on the guided busway in Histon, near Cambridge, on Tuesday (2 April) and smashed the window of the shelter using a drain cover.

The incident was reported by a witness who said Naidoo made multiple attempts to smash the window before finally succeeding.

After he’d caused the damage, he handed himself in at Parkside Police Station, in Cambridge.

Naidoo, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage under £5,000 and was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (3 April).

He was also ordered to pay £800 to cover the cost of the damage.

PC Krzysztof Echolc said: “Naidoo’s mindless actions caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage and great inconvenience to the local community in Histon.

“I hope this sentence gives him time to reflect on his senseless actions and I sincerely hope he thinks twice before repeating them.”
