Drink driver jailed

7 Apr 2021

A man who blew more than three times the legal alcohol limit in a roadside breathalyser test but then refused to comply with further tests has been jailed.

Luis Goncalves, 46, was seen by officers driving his silver Skoda Octavia at speed along Park Road, Peterborough, at about 12.30am on Monday, 29 March.

Officers followed Goncalves and signalled for him to pull over in a nearby cark park.

When he got out the car and walked towards them, they became suspicious he may be intoxicated.

A roadside breath test revealed Goncalves was more than three times the legal alcohol limit (119ugs).

He was arrested and taken to Thorpe Wood Police Station where he failed to provide further breath tests.

Further inquiries also revealed Goncalves was disqualified from driving, meaning his insurance was invalid.

Goncalves, of Eastfield Road, Peterborough, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a breath test, driving without insurance and driving while disqualified.

He was sentenced to 14 weeks in prison and banned from driving for five years at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 30 March.

PC Jordan Westwood said: "Goncalves was caught red handed when his manner of driving grabbed the attention of eagle-eyed officers on patrol in Peterborough.

"I hope this sentence gives him time to reflect on his behaviour and highlights how seriously road offences are taken by both police and the courts."
