Our Ref: FOI2018/06865
REQUEST UNDER THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 Ref No: FOI2018/06865

I write in connection with your request for information received on 28th November. I note you seek access to the following information:

I am seeking information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 in relation to the theft of catalytic Converters from motor vehicles (including cars, vans and HGVs).

In particular could you tell me:
1) The number of reports of “thefts from motor vehicles” logged in your force area over the last five years? Please supply data for 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014 and 2013. Note: if data is only available by financial year please supply this for 2017/18, 2016/17, 2015/16, 2014/15 and 2013/14.

2) Please tell me how many of the above reports involved the theft or attempted theft of a catalytic converter. Again, please provide a breakdown of the figures for the last five years.
Please provide a response by email to the address below. In addition, please call or email if any part of this request needs to be clarified and/or reworded to comply with the 2000 Act.

I am required by the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (The Act) to handle all requests in a manner that is blind to the identity of the requestor. Any information released in response to a request is regarded as being published and therefore, in the public domain without caveat. Following enquiries within the Constabulary please see our response below.

A wildcard search in the property description and MO text to identify which crimes involved the theft of a catalytic converter has been carried out. Please note that due to the large number of crimes we are unable to read each to identify if this has been recorded anywhere else and therefore the actual number may be higher than the number provided. To read every crime would take this request over cost (in excess of 18 hours).

Data
 Year  2013 2014  2015  2016  2017
 Total thefts from motor vehicles 3385  2979  3323  3860  5117
 Thefts involving catalytic converters  331 108  137  57  35

The numerical data presented in this response is an un-audited snapshot of un-published data sourced from "live" systems and is subject to the interpretation of the original request by the individual extracting the data. Should you have any further enquiries concerning this matter please do not hesitate to contact me quoting the above reference number.
Yours sincerely
Karen Kennedy
