Fair Processing Notice

Bedfordshire Police, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Constabularies (BCH) collects and uses personal information so that it can carry out its legal and legitimate functions as defined by legislation, common law and best practice. We use information for our policing purpose which includes:

  •  Protecting Life and Property
  •  Preserving Order
  •  Preventing the Commission of Offences
  •  Bringing Offenders to Justice
  •  Any duty or responsibility of the police arising from common or statute law

BCH will hold personal information relating to a range of individuals including victims, witnesses, complainants, suspects and offenders, in connection with our policing purpose as well as details of visitors to the Force and others who work for or with the Force.

Information is handled in accordance with the Data Protection Act, which governs fair and lawful processing, maintenance and security of data.

Access to personal data is permitted only for policing purposes and allowed only to appropriately trained police personnel in the course of their official duties.

Information held by BCH may be shared with other organisations where this is necessary for a policing purpose. For example, data may be shared:

  • With Criminal Justice systems as part of the pre-charge and post-charge processes e.g. when prosecuting someone through the Courts
  • When working with partner agencies to reduce crime and disorder and anti-social behaviour as required by the Crime and Disorder Act
  • With the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), who provides information to organisations to enable them to make safer recruitment decisions by identifying potential candidates who may be unsuitable to work with children or vulnerable members of society
  • With other professional and regulatory bodies
  • Where specifically required to do so by statute or by Order of the Court
