"I liked the idea of going into work and doing something different every day, where I get to meet loads of people and try to put a smile on their faces whilst I do it"

I  have been in the police since about 2018. Since then I have been a response officer in Peterborough, based at Thorpe Wood. I was brought up in London and then Peterborough since I was a young child. I chose to go into policing straight from 6th form as I wanted to pursue a career rather than getting a job to pass the time.

I liked the idea of going into work and doing something different every day, where I get to meet loads of people and try to put a smile on their faces whilst I do it.

Not only this but for someone joining young I was happy with the money and the prospect of having money put away for when I retire (in many, many years).

Initially I thought I would not get into the police because of my age and saw a lot of older officers.

I attended two recruitment events and from the first I knew this was a career I was keen to get into.

Through the events I got in touch with an officer who gave me some support and advice through the initial application.

The training was surprisingly fun and as a small cohort we developed a close bond. I enjoyed the role plays due to how practical they were, as well as speeches from officers from different departments. One of my most memorable moments was attending an incident, initially by myself, due to a dog being loose in the road and it transpired to be a murder where I arrested two suspects for murder.

On response I love that I can attend numerous incidents of a completely different nature in one day and can assist other specialised departments in their roles.

My three favourite training courses were my blue light driving course, Taser and method of entry. I am keen to progress to the roads policing unit in the near future and take a keen interest in road-policing-related matters.

To anyone considering joining I would urge them to give it a go, make use of Op Insight, the ride-along scheme (when it comes back live), or join as a Special constable to get a taster for the role first.I have taken out observers on the Op Insight scheme and equally enjoy showing them what we do.

I joined a few years ago and never looked back and look forward to a long and exciting career.
