ADCP recruitment process


The Accelerated Detective Constable Program recruitment process
Stage one   Following an online application, you will be sent an email informing you whether or not you have passed the shortlisting stage.
Stage two


If successful, you will be invited to attend the Police Recruit Assessment Centre (which is held at the College of Policing, Ryton). Here you will undergo tests consisting of:

  • two written tests
  • four role-play exercises
  • a structured interview
  • a verbal logical reasoning test
  • a numerical test.


Stage three


Candidates who achieve the pass mark of 50 per cent or above at the national assessment centre will then proceed to the next stage of the recruitment process.

Your assessment centre ‘pass’ only remains valid for 12 months from the date of the assessment and this timeframe may only be extended in exceptional circumstances.


 Stage four


You will be invited to attend an interview with two senior police officers. If successful, candidates will undertake the next stage – pre-employment checks.


 Stage five


Pre-employment checks, which include security and financial checks, your current and previous employment references (and/or education/character references) covering a five-year period.


 Stage six


The force medical advisor will assess your suitability to be a police officer and you will take a fitness test.


 Stage seven


A one-month distance learning course. This is a modular course which you will complete at home.

It will cover the basic knowledge you will need as a probationary police officer. There is also an assessment day which takes place at the end of the course.


 Stage eight


When you have successfully passed all of the pre-employment, fitness and medical checks and development course, you will receive your contract of employment via email for your allocated intake.
