Apply for a firearms licence

Always allow enough time for a renewal or change to be processed before a license or certificate expires or becomes invalid.

Firearms licence application form

Whether you are applying for a new licence or renewal of an existing licence, please download, complete and return Form 201.

Land authority or club application form

To register or renew as a club or land authority for the purposes of shooting related activities, please download, complete and return the Land Authority and Club Form.

Application costs

Fees and charges for new firearms licence applications, renewals and amendments are detailed in the table below. Payments should be made via cheque or postal order, made payable to;

Lost or destroyed firearms licence

Firearms licences that have been lost or destroyed can be replaced. Please contact us to arrange a replacement certificate.

Application timescales

An application for a new licence or for the renewal of an existing licence can take between four and six weeks from when we receive a correctly completed application, photographs and the appropriate fee. 

Updated certificates for changing address are usually returned within 10 working days.

To assist your application, you may wish to include written authority for your use of any land or proof of membership of a Home Office Approved club with your application.

Renewal reminders

Reminders to renew certificates are sent three months before your certificate is due to expire. 

We recommend you submit renewal applications within three weeks of receiving a reminder to allow enough time for your renewal to be reviewed and processed. It is your responsibility to remember to renew your certificate by sending a completed application to us before your current certificate expires. 

If your renewal application has less than six weeks until your current certificate expires, you may be required to place your firearms, ammunition or shotguns with a person authorised to possess them until you receive a renewed certificate.
