Quick exit

Police impersonator

This is a scam which involves fraudsters phoning individuals pretending to be a police officer.

Scammers usually suggest the victim call their bank or the police to confirm their details. However, when the victim hangs up the phone, the scammer stays on the line, which stops the call from being disconnected. As a result, when the victim makes the call to their bank or the police, the victim is actually talking to the fraudster again, thinking they are speaking with their bank or the police.

During the conversation, the offender usually says that they will need to examine the victim’s bank card, including their PIN number in case it has been compromised and that a courier will come to collect the card.

A smartly dressed person then arrives at the victim’s home, the card is taken and the PIN number used to withdraw cash from the victims bank account.

To prevent this from happening, our advice would be to;

  • hang up if you ever have any doubts about someone who has called you
  • ensure the line has been terminated before making any further calls. You can tell if the dial tone is present or by using another phone
  • never give out your PIN number, banks will never ask you for it
  • never give bank cards to anyone at your door, even if they say they’re from the bank.
