A ‘Special Weekend’ tackling anti-social behaviour

Volunteer police officers spent more than 700 hours patrolling the streets of Cambridgeshire during National Specials Weekend (Feb 11-12).

Specials supported police officer colleagues in a range of areas from neighbourhood policing, traffic support, rural policing and reactive support.

This work included foot and mobile patrols to target anti-social behaviour, responding to emergencies and assisting with the execution of police warrants.

Specials from Ely and Cambridge city carried out anti-social behaviour patrols based on neighbourhood priorities on Friday. On Saturday, Specials from Histon carried out anti-social behaviour patrols based on rural neighbourhood priorities and speed checks.

Two vehicle defect notices were issued, three drivers were asked to produce documents such as MOT certificate, driving license or insurance and one Section 59 was issued for driving in an anti-social manner.

Specials carried out ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) duties in Huntingdon and Fenland on Saturday as well as tackling shoplifting offences in March.

Two fixed penalty notices were issued and four vehicles were stopped for vehicle defects and were asked to produce documents such as MOT certificate, driving license or insurance.

RCAT (Rural Community Action Team) Special officers worked with the Environment Agency on Saturday to tackle offences such as fishing and poaching.

In the evening, Specials tackled anti-social behaviour highlighted by neighbourhood priorities, carrying out patrols and working with partners.

Specials in Peterborough helped tackle neighbourhood priorities around anti-social behaviour as well as cracking down on alcohol misuse, parking issues and rowdy and nuisance behaviour.

Five vehicles were stopped and two notices were issued for vehicle defects.

Cambridgeshire currently has 203 Special officers who work about 45,000 hours every year. We’re always keen to welcome more ‘Specials’ on board, so if you’d like more information about volunteering as a Special, see current vacancies.
