Headcams for Cambridge and Ely

HEADCAMS will be worn by officers in southern division every Friday and Saturday night.

The cameras will record extra, good quality evidence in a variety of scenarios including crime scenes, public order incidents or domestic violence incidents.

The footage can be used in court. In other forces the cameras have led to an increase in offenders being charged and successfully prosecuted.

They are particularly useful in domestic violence situations where victims may be reluctant to give statements.

Officers in Peterborough have been using the headcams for nearly two years and officers in Fenland and Huntingdonshire began using them last year.

Inspector Ian Lyons said: "This was trialled on the division quite some time ago and we are now in a position where training has been rolled out to reactive officers, neighbourhood officers, PCSOs and soon to be trained are Special Constables.

"The cameras will be worn by officers attending incidents in Cambridge, Ely, Histon and Sawston. It is hoped that as well as gaining good quality evidence, it will help keep the public and officers safe if offenders know they could be captured on film.

"The cameras will also form part of our additional night time economy patrols which always take place in the lead up to the Christmas festivities."
