Preventing e-crime

Are you doing all you can to protect your business?

Over the period from 2007 / 2009, 20 specific offences under the Computer Misuse Act were reported to Cambridgeshire Constabulary. Half of these offences involved ex-employees accessing company systems. Others included computer hacking and unauthorised access to user accounts. All of these incidents had an adverse impact on the businesses affected.

We believe that this number of offences is a very small percentage of actual incidents. The Home Office has suggested that almost nine out of 10 businesses have experienced electronic crime attacks. If you suspect that you are a victim of e-crime, please report it to the police as soon as possible.

What is e-crime?

This refers to a criminal activity where a computer or computer network is the source, tool, target or place of a crime. It also includes a wide range of other types of crimes such as fraud, theft, blackmail, forgery and embezzlement.

Why does it affect me?

Due to the nature of this type of crime with new advances in technology, new threats are emerging all the time. Any business using a computer is at risk. If that computer or any other electronic device is connected to the internet, the risk is even greater. It is therefore very important that businesses understand what the risks are and are able to respond to them.
